Papa John's will donate 20 percent of sales Tuesday for the final expenses of a former employee who was killed in an accident last month, according to the restaurant director of operations.
John Jump, 30, was struck while riding his bicycle at about 5 a.m. on Sept. 23 along the northbound lanes of U.S. 119, known as Corridor G, just north of the Trace Fork Boulevard entrance, according to police. He died the next day.
Jump was returning home from working the night shift at Taco Bell, according to police and Praveen Srinivasan, operations director for Papa John's.
Srinivasan said Jump worked for the St. Albans Papa John's about six years ago as a delivery driver.
He described Jump as "very helpful and nice" and a "pleasure to work with."
Srinivasan said Jump's fiancee, Samantha Hastings, also formerly worked at Papa John's. Srinivasan said they have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old child, while Jump also has another 11-year-old child.
Additional money after funeral expenses will go to a college fund for the three kids set up at City National Bank.
Srinivasan said John was also an organ donor and his organs were donated to several patients.
Police said the driver was James Hill, of Logan County. He was never charged in the incident, according to a Kanawha County courts employee.
Sgt. Randy Sampson, traffic commander for the Charleston Police Department, said Hill was not at fault in the incident.
He said Jump didn't have adequate lighting on his bicycle.
"The driver of the vehicle just couldn't see him until it was too late," Sampson said.
Participating locations in the fundraiser include Kanawha City, Patrick Street, St. Albans, Cross Lanes and Teays Valley.
