Tuesday's Gazette-Mail and Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival might be one of the last chances to soak in the last bit of summer weather.
The festival, now in its 71st year, will take place at 6:30 p.m. at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
By festival kickoff temperatures will be in the low 80s - a "more comfortable temperature" than the day's forecast high of 89 degrees, according to Maura Casey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Those who come out to watch the bands from all eight county high schools can expect relatively clear skies and a slight breeze throughout the evening, she said.
"It's a good night to have it," Casey said. "It's one of the last chances this week to soak up the last of the summer weather."
Bands will be scored on performance in several categories throughout their performances.
The night's most successful band overall will be named the Festival Grand Champion. One majorette will be named Miss Kanawha Majorette, a coveted title that dates back to the festival's beginning.
The new Miss Majorette will be crowned by the 2016 champion, Carrie Long, a feature twirler at George Washington High School.
Guests will have the chance to see Long twirl again this year, although a reigning Miss Majorette may not win the crown two years in a row.
The Capital High School band will be back this year - vying to defend its title as Grand Champion.
Another highlight of the night will be a performance from special guest The Pride of West Virginia - The Mountaineer Marching Band.
Tickets will be sold at the gate for $8.
