Capital High School will reopen Monday, following the Kanawha County school system's attempt to lower levels of mold at the school.

Officials said the air sample results from Friday will allow for the school to reopen - with the exception of a handful of rooms.

The school's main auditorium, library, a small auditorium and two classrooms will remain closed until final tests come in, according to an email from county schools spokeswoman Briana Warner.

Ohio- and West Virginia-based Pinnacle Environmental Consultants, Inc., which took the air samples, reported the mold concentration levels found in rooms by the number of spores or fungal structures per cubic meter of air. One of the two categories of mold Pinnacle said needed to be addressed was Aspergillus/Penicillium-Like, a category that includes two separate groups each including at least hundreds of different mold species.

The results of Friday's air sampling survey show the total indoor concentration of mold was below the outdoor concentrations, according to a report from Pinnacle.

The results from Friday's survey also showed the Aspergillus/Penicillium-Like concentrations for all indoor samples collected were below the previous levels of 500 count/m3.

In addition to collecting air samples, Pinnacle collected a tape-lift sample from a beam in the school's library.

Results from the tape lift sample found Aspergillus/Penicillium-Like to be at 1,802 count/cm2 in the library, the report said. However, the library's air sample did not detect any mold spores.

"While this appears odd, we have seen where mold is present on the surface but not in the air - especially with all of the cleaning and air scrubbers present in the room during cleaning," the report reads. "Based on the results, Pinnacle recommends reoccupying all room except the library. The mold identified in the tape lift needs to be cleaned and disinfected and another air sample collected prior to using the room."

Crews will continue to sampling the library and other affected rooms Monday and Tuesday.

Staff Writer Ryan Quinn contributed to this report.
