Police say a St. Albans man was seriously injured in a boating accident on the Kanawha River over the weekend.

Saturday night, James Inghram, 47, was traveling downstream on the Kanawha River in the area of Riverside Park when his boat struck a barge that was traveling upstream, according to Sgt. J.E. Payne of the Natural Resources Police. The boat was crushed and later found on top of pontoon boats on a dock, about 100 yards away.

Payne said Inghram was in serious condition and likely sustained head trauma.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. Payne said determining the cause may take some time.

"Boat wrecks are a little different than road wrecks," he said. "The evidence washes away. We're not to that point yet where we would make a determination, especially not being able to talk to him yet."

The accident was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Payne said that Inghram was never trapped under the boat, despite other media reports.
