Nitro City Council members voted Tuesday night to move forward with a sewage system project that will repair existing lines and add new ones to the city's system.
"It's lines we are constantly spending money on to repair or we replace them," Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said.
Council members OK'd the issuance of $7.8 million of sewage revenue bonds for the project. The original bid came in just over $8 million, Casebolt said.
"Our bids came in very, very good," Casebolt said.
Council members' discussions on the project clarified that customers' rates would not increase because of the project. The project will also extend service to roughly 94 people.
The entire project includes six different project areas throughout the city.
Casebolt believes this will help the city keep its system in good order.
The city will publish the project in the newspaper for two weeks before holding a public hearing. Casebolt said the project is on track to kick off on Nov. 19.
City Council also approved several measures presented by Nitro Police Chief Steve Walker that clarify police officers' policies for annual leave, sick time and overtime calculation.
Moving forward officers' sick leave and vacation leave will be capped and will not roll over into a new year.
"It's something that has to be done," Walker said. "It's an unfunded liability."
