School officials in Kanawha and Putnam counties keep having to find additional days in their school calendars to make up days canceled by snow.
Kanawha County Schools' superintendent said Monday his school system will add another make-up day to the end of the school year, in line with a preference to preserve spring break.
Ron Duerring had planned to convert Monday, when schools were originally scheduled to be out for Presidents Day, into a make-up day to compensate for one of the seven missed school days so far this winter. But following overnight snow, local schools were again canceled.
Students will now have make-up days on March 25, which is Good Friday, as well as six days tacked onto the originally planned end of the school year: May 25, May 26, May 27, May 31, June 1 and June 2. Memorial Day - on Monday, May 30 - isn't currently planned for a make-up day.
Duerring said students will likely return to classes today. The Gazette-Mail is awaiting information on the make-up days planned for Kanawha's few year-round schools.
Putnam County Schools will only have five make-up days at the end of the school year, according to school system spokeswoman Rudi Raynes.
The dates were already scheduled into the school calendar as out-of-school environment days, and will be June 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
