The Thomas Health System Foundation's Chics for Charity is hosting "Women and Power," a self defense workshop, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West in South Charleston.

"Women and Power" is a workshop designed and taught by security consultant John Casey and personal trainer Brandon Walters. The workshop is for all ages and fitness levels and will teach women the secrets of personal safety and ways to prevent becoming a victim.

The cost for the event is $50 per person and benefits Thomas Memorial and St. Francis Hospitals.

Chics for Charity provides a networking opportunity for women while fundraising for a cause. Membership has grown to more than 430 businesswomen in just over two years.

Funds raised Saturday will assist patients who are discharged from St. Francis Hospital and cannot afford medications or other medical needs to continue their recovery at home. Proceeds also fund the Junior and Senior Nursing Academy, which provides children ages 12-14, who are interested in a health care career, experience in nursing and in a hospital setting. Funding is also provided for Prime of Life events held throughout the community that offer free and low-cost health screenings to the uninsured and to those who cannot afford co-pays or deductibles.
