Dunbar residents interested in becoming the city's next mayor have until Friday to tell city hall they're interested in the job.
Mayoral candidates may submit their names in writing in person to the mayor's office until Friday at 4:30 p.m., interim mayor Steve Arnott said.
Candidates must be Dunbar residents and they must be eligible to vote.
Arnott, Dunbar's city council president, is filling in after former Mayor Terry Greenlee resigned to become the deputy commissioner of the state Alcohol Beverage Control Administration.
City council will have a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday to consider applicants and discuss the next step in the selection process, Arnott said.
Arnott, who said he's not interested in being mayor, said several council members and city department heads as well as former Mayor Jack Yeager have expressed an interest in the job.
"I think we'll have a good pool of candidates," Arnott said.
Arnott said the council could choose a new mayor at the Aug. 21 regular meeting at the earliest. Arnott said several people have asked why the city can't hold a special election to choose a mayor. State code and city charter say the council is to appoint a new mayor, he said.
