A woman who overdosed on heroin Thursday was at one of the houses on Charleston's West Side where prosecutors have said overdoses are all too common.

Police on Friday morning originally said the house at 1803 7th Ave., where Kayla Slater overdosed Thursday afternoon, was the home of Charleston Councilman Bernard Slater. The home is actually owned by Slater's relative, Steve Slater.

Kayla Slater, 23, was revived by emergency responders, according to Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper.

The councilman lists his address as 1801 7th Ave., according to information on the City of Charleston's website. It's not clear if he is related to Kayla Slater.

He is the cousin of Steven Coleman, who is charged with murder in the February overdose death of Melody Ann Oxley. Police say Steven Coleman, who is Steve Slater's son, provided Oxley with the heroin that caused her death.

In September, police said they were investigating Bernard Slater after they found text messages from him in Steven Coleman's phone. The councilman allegedly had offered to lie to police to help his cousin's case. Bernard Slater had not been charged by police over the allegations.

In August, during a hearing in Steven Coleman's case, assistant Kanawha prosecutor Don Morris told a judge that since November 2014, there had been six overdoses at either the house where Oxley was found or the house next door. Bernard Slater, who was elected earlier this year, has a lengthy criminal history and has told the Gazette-Mail that he used to struggle with a substance abuse problem.
