South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens announced the city's trash pickup schedule for Thanksgiving week.

Public Works Department employees will pick up trash on a normal schedule Monday and Tuesday, Mullens said. Trash will be picked up curb-side only on Wednesday and Friday. There will be no service on Thursday.

The days after Thanksgiving are the city's heaviest trash pickup days of the year, Mullens said during Thursday evening's council meeting.

In other action, council agreed to close about a half-block of Division Street from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 8. Thomas Memorial Hospital is planning a 70th anniversary celebration that will honor several armed forces personnel and include a 21-gun salute.

Council also listened as Mullens proclaimed Nov. 22 to Nov. 28 "Christian Heritage Week" in the city. The proclamation urges local churches to participate with relevant Sunday school lessons, sermons, patriotic song services, youth programs and prayer meetings.

During announcements Mullens urged members of council to become knowledgeable about the unfunded federal mandates being imposed on the Sanitary Board so council members can in turn inform their constituents. "There ultimately will be rate increases," he said.

The mayor thanked Recreation Director Arnett Hoston for his efforts to make Thursday's Thanksgiving lunch at the South Charleston Community Center a success and told council that the city's senior nutrition program is working well.

Mullens wished the South Charleston Black Eagles football team good luck in their playoff game against Wheeling Park Friday evening.

During department head reports:

n Hoston reported that the city's youth football program had another successful year.

n Fire Chief John Taylor said the air packs purchased with a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant have arrived and will be put in service over the next several weeks.

n City Attorney Michael Moore noted that the state Municipal Home Rule Board approved the city's plan to impose a 1 percent sales tax. The plan will be presented to council on Dec. 3 and Dec. 17, he said.

n Moore also announced that a beautification easement with The Dow Chemical Co. has been finalized. Mullens said the project will begin next spring. It involves planting greenery and erecting a new sign on MacCorkle Avenue on the east end of the city.

Ward 2 Councilman Mark Wolford did not attend Thursday's meeting.

Council's next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at City Hall on D Street.
