Charleston Gazette-Mail announces WV Gaming Championship esports event

The Charleston Gazette-Mail is bringing esports to the Kanawha Valley.

The inaugural West Virginia Gaming Championship, a day-long competitive video game event, will take place Aug. 12 at the Charleston Town Center mall. Consisting of three separate tournaments, the W.Va. Gaming Championship — presented by the Gazette-Mail and sponsored by Gamestop and the Town Center — will bring hundreds of gamers of all ages to the Capital City to compete for over $5,000 in cash and prizes.

Solo players can test their skills in 16-person, single-elimination tournaments for “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” on Nintendo Switch and “NBA 2K17” on PlayStation 4. The main event will be a 32-team, 4v4 single-elimination “Call of Duty: Black Ops III” tournament on PS4. Entry fees are $15 for the single-player events and $200 per team in the “Black Ops III” competition.
