A Kanawha County man pleaded guilty Wednesday in circuit court to possession of child pornography.

Gary Adkins, 33, of St. Albans, admitted he possessed on his computer 291 videos and four images that depicted minors performing sexual acts, according to Kanawha County assistant prosecutor Fred Giggenbach.

He faces a possible sentence of up to two years in prison, a fine of no more than $2,000, life as a registered sex offender and extended supervision for no more than 50 years.

Adkins has two children and has given up his parental rights.

When asked what happened, Adkins said he was downloading movies and he accidentally downloaded child pornography. He said when he saw the content of the video, he immediately stopped viewing it.

Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom said that Adkins was not being "forthright and honest." Upon further questioning, Adkins admitted to having the nearly 300 images and videos on his computer.

At least 50 known victims of child pornography were identifiable in the images and videos found on his computer, Giggenbach said.

Sentencing will be at 10 a.m. July 14 at the Kanawha County Judicial Annex.
