A woman is facing criminal charges after she allegedly neglected her disabled mother and exploited her financially.
State Police troopers arrested Amanda Reavis, 36, on Tuesday. Reavis left her mother at home with bed sores, soiled clothing and little interaction, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
Her mother, now 58, worked at Charleston Area Medical Center as a nurse until her mental abilities declined in 2012, the complaint states.
Reavis' ex-boyfriend reported the alleged neglect, and the mother was admitted to Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston. She weighed about 80 pounds, and her mental condition is worsening, according to the complaint.
An investigator discovered Reavis had control of her mother's two bank accounts. One account had a balance of $58,000, and the other received monthly Social Security deposits of $1,724.
Though Reavis shopped for everyday goods at grocery stores and pharmacies, it was the personal withdrawals that caught the attention of law enforcement, according to the complaint.
Out of the approximately $78,000 under Reavis' control, the complaint states, only $85.14 remained after about seven months.
Troopers arrested Reavis on charges of financial exploitation and the abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult. She was released Tuesday on a $5,000 bond.
