A man and woman were arraigned Thursday in Kanawha County Magistrate Court in connection with a shooting Monday on Charleston's West Side.

Scott Breeden Jr., 19, and Yasmin Pegram, 18, can be seen in a surveillance video holding handguns and shooting into a car - occupied by three passengers - during a failed drug deal, according to a criminal complaint.

The driver, Keith Paul, complained about the drugs he bought from Pegram and Breeden, and the pair, according to the complaint, shot him in his neck and torso. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Bullets also struck passenger Marsha Nichols, and a third passenger was apparently unharmed.

Both suspects are charged with one count of wanton endangerment and two counts of malicious wounding. Bond was set at $1 million, each.

Breeden arrived to Thursday's hearing in white disposable coveralls because police had seized his clothes as evidence, said Lt. Steve Cooper, the Charleston Police Department's chief of detectives. Breeden showed a look of sudden surprise after learning the amount of his bond.

"Dang, ya'll are taxing," he said.

Pegram wore a gray hoodie that pictured Elwood Pegram, who died in 2008 after someone shot into his SUV at least four times on Stockton Street, according to Gazette-Mail archives.

A woman hugged Pegram after the hearing and fought through tears.

"I'll do everything to get you out of here," she said.
