The City of Nitro hopes to soon have a new flag.

At City Council's next meeting, on the first Tuesday of February, Council will read an ordinance for the first time which adopts a new flag, said Mayor Dave Casebolt.

Casebolt said a designer already had been contracted and that the flag was shown at the previous meeting.

At a short meeting Tuesday night, the council approved a plan to repair the grass at the city's soccer field and approved spending $500 to help a horse parade in the town in May.

Casebolt said that the soccer field gets a lot of use, and in order to repair the Bermuda grass, the city budgeted $5,000 for repairs. The last time the city spent money on repairs, it budgeted spending $2,500 but only spent about $1,800, Casebolt said.

A woman on the city's branding committee approached Council about financially supporting a horse parade in the city. The parade will happen just before the dedication of the city's Living Memorial Park, which honors the city's involvement in World War I.

"Nitro itself is a living memorial to World War I," Casebolt said. "At that time, soldiers rode horses. Horses used to patrol the streets every day."

The council will meet again on Feb. 7.
