The Kanawha County Public Library system's board voted Monday night to hire a Nitro company to conduct a hazardous materials survey of the library's main branch.

The board is in the process of deciding whether to overhaul the main branch, located at the corner of Capitol and Quarrier streets in downtown Charleston, or move to a new location. Either way, a hazardous materials survey is needed, said System Director Alan Engelbert.

If there were to be a major renovation at the main branch, "that's information we would need," Engelbert said following Monday's meeting.

Terradon Corporation will perform the work for $6,865, which was the lowest of five bids. The survey will identify any hazardous materials and provide recommendations and cost estimates for abatement or mitigation.

Last month, Engelbert said the main branch location options have been pared down to three, with a renovation of the current branch being one of the three options.

In other business Monday, board members accepted three parcels of land, which serve as parking lots for the St. Albans' branch.

The contribution will ensure that the parking lots remain available to the St. Albans library and reduce the financial burden on the St. Albans Public Library Advisory Board, according to information provided by the board.
