South Charleston City Council discussed charitable events at Thursday night's meeting.
Fire Chief Virgil White announced that the South Charleston Fire Department would be participating in its 3rd Annual Operation Warm.
"We get with schools principals, counselors and stuff and we see if there is a need for the children that are less fortunate," White said. "We get names and sizes and work with Operation Warm, an organization that is nationwide."
Operation Warm works with fire departments across the nation to facilitate these events.
"We do fundraisers and we have raised $1,100," White said. "The company hired to make the coats are 100% American made.
Donations for Operation Warm can be delivered to any South Charleston fire station. Checks may be made out to Operation Warm or to the South Charleston fire fighters' union.
White said people soon will be able to make donations on the department's Facebook page.
In addition, Police Chief Brad Rinehart updated Council on the annual Shop with a Cop event, where police officers help less fortunate children in the area do some Christmas shopping via donations.
"We'll have Shop with a Cop at 6:00 p.m. Dec. 13 at Wal-Mart," Rinehart said. "Wal-Mart gave us $2,500 in grant money."
Rinehart also reported on the police department's other charitable action.
"We did No Shave November," Rinehart said. "Some of those beards looked halfway decent, some of them looked awful, but we raised about $2,000 that goes to St. Jude Children's Hospital."
In addition, Council discussed garbage pickup during the upcoming holidays.
According to Council, garbage pickup will remain the same, with pickup on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
Mayor Frank Mullens also reminded Council that any additional garbage can be taken to Public Works at any time.
Ward 7 Councilman Jamie Sibold made a motion for Council to accept a bid for the South Charleston Fire Department.
"It is for a Ford utility vehicle purchased on the state bid in the amount of $37,104." Sibold said.
The motion passed by unanimous roll call vote.
Councilman Sibold also gave a report on a meeting with the South Charleston Library Board.
"We recommend the reappointment of Dawn Estep," Sibold said. "She has been with us for a long time. She is passionate about the library and she knows it all."
Council discussed how well the library was doing after Sibold's report.
All Council members were present at Thursday evening's meeting.
Council's next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 on the second floor of City Hall, D Street.
