With Thanksgiving and its attendant turkey-cooking a few days away, local firefighters and emergency responders gave a fire safety demonstration on Tuesday at their Emergency Preparedness Training Center in Institute. Some tips shared from the National Fire Protection Association include:
n Stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on food while it's cooking.
n Keep children away from hot stoves, foods and liquids.
n The NFPA doesn't recommend using a turkey fryer at home at all, but if you do, don't use it in a house, in a garage or on a deck.
n Make sure turkeys are completely thawed and dry before putting them into hot oil.
n Turn the burner on the fryer off while putting the turkey into the oil.
