South Charleston is making plans for its annual holiday activities.
South Charleston City Council approved a motion by Ward 7 Councilman Jamie Sibold in the amount of $2,000 to be given to the annual "Shop with a Cop" event.
"We started it when I got down here years ago," said Chief of Police Brad Rinehart. "We contact the four grade schools in the city, and we invited Alum Creek as well [this year], so we have five grade schools. The schools help us pick under-privileged children that won't have much of a Christmas."
Rinehart said he raises money through different organizations to help pay for the program.
He called the night a great opportunity to reach out to the community.
"Each school will give us names of six kids or so and the policemen come in uniform. Last year we spent $150 on each kid," Rinehart said. "They can come with their list and we encourage them to get themselves something."
Council also approved by unanimous voice vote the closing of D Street between 3rd and 4th avenues from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 for the annual Christmas Parade.
City officials and Council discussed the garbage pickup schedule changes for the upcoming holiday week.
Garbage pickup route will take the regular route Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. Garbage pickup will be citywide curbside only Nov. 23 and Nov. 25.
There will be no garbage pickup on Thanksgiving Day.
Council also discussed South Charleston High School's upcoming playoff away game against Spring Valley High School, in Wayne County, and encouraged anyone who could to attend.
All council members were present at Thursday evening's meeting.
Council's next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 on the second floor of City Hall, D Street.
