Nitro's police department will be moving to a new building within three months.

The city council approved the purchase of the Peoplework Solutions building at its Tuesday night meeting. Mayor Dave Casebolt said this means the police will have more space and the city will pay less money per month than it does for the lease on the department's current location.

Casebolt did not know exactly how much the new building would cost, but said the current location costs about $3,200 a month.

"The current police station is small and we've been in it for years," he said. "We're paying a lot of rent for it."

The council also approved a four-year plan to "move the city forward," Casebolt said.

The plan includes installing a drain to alleviate flooding problems on the upper end of the city, including Frederick and Oakland streets. The project will cost about $1.4 million.

Council also approved moving forward with the repairs of the riverbank at the city park. Repairing the riverbank will cost about $800,000, the mayor said.

Casebolt said the city plans to pay off both projects within the next three years.

The council also announced the city was approved for another streetscape grant from the Division of Highways.

The $375,000 grant will go toward improving the sidewalk from 21st Street to 20th Street, then down 20th Street to Bank Avenue.

This was the third streetscape grant the city has received so far.
