Nitro City Council accepted a bid Tuesday night to bring down a plagued structure.

Council members accepted a $4,200 bid from Property Maintenance Inc. to complete a demolition and asbestos abatement at 1106 11th St.

"I'll be glad to get 1106 down," Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said.

The structure has been an on-going problem for three to four years. The city struggled to connect with the property owner until a new owner took control, Casebolt said.

The city will use sales tax savings to pay for the demolition and replenish those funds when the property is sold, Casebolt said.

The structure at 1108 11th St. also remains on council's radar.

"We will continue dialogue [with the property owner] and if we can't move forward, we will condemn it," Casebolt said.

Also on Tuesday, Council announced they would begin to accept detailed design bids for improvements to the library.

"We have the money to pay for [the detailed designs] with levy money that is coming in," Casebolt said.

It is expected the plans will take about three to four months to complete. It's a four to five year project, Casebolt added.

"We will have a nice community library when we are done," Casebolt said.

Council members accepted a second reading of a project that would improve and expand the city's existing sewage system.

The project will be published in the newspaper on Thursday and Oct. 29, and a public hearing will be held Friday.

"We are excited to get this project started," Casebolt said.

Council approved issuing $7.8 million of sewage system revenue bonds for the project.

The project is expected to begin Nov. 19.
