South Charleston High School Principal Mike Arbogast talked about security and safety measures taken at the school during his brief state of the school address at City Council Thursday night.
"We've got our schools locked up," Arbogast said. "We are up to 80 cameras.
"I don't want people sitting at work wondering if their kids are safe. If they go to South Charleston High School, they are safe."
Arbogast said the school also has started live-streaming morning announcements online.
"You can Google it and see everything that is going on," he said.
Council recognized Roger Hughes, of the state treasurer's office, for his annual "Get a Life" program. The program teaches children about the importance of financial stability.
"We come in and give them a real, hands on life-skills game," Hughes said. "I have kids that will come up and say, 'I want to go home and apologize to my parents. They do this everyday, don't they? I had no idea what they do for me.'
"That happens every time I run the program."
Hughes is seeking at least 25 volunteers to help run the program that will take place the morning of Dec. 9.
Ward 4 Councilman Jeff Williamson and Mayor Frank Mullens recommended a residential parking only rule for the 200 block of Division Street.
"The medical facilities in this area have started charging for parking," Mullens said. "Whenever they do that, people start parking in residential areas."
Council passed the recommendation by unanimous voice vote after some discussion.
After the discussion of larger parking issues, Mullens said that he would be undertaking a parking study to attempt to solve the issue.
Council also recognized the South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau and Brian Ulery, of Thomas Health System, for their contributions to the Armed Forces Day Parade.
"They are a great partner and they are so good about participating in the community," Mayor Frank Mullens said. "That was just a way of showing our appreciation."
Council approved the appointment of Karen Buckley to South Charleston Visual Art Commission by unanimous voice vote. Council also appointed Morgan Winfree to the property board by unanimous roll call voice vote.
In other action, Councilman Jamie Sibold Ward 7 presented the following bids, all of which were approved by unanimous roll call vote:
n A bid for two new dump trucks for $203,896.
n A new compact excavator to replace an antiquated piece of machinery for $66,364 with implements.
n Recycling and compost bags, a budgeted item in the amount of $8.60 and $5.43 per box.
n The new setup of the City of South Charleston website in the amount of $16,000.
All members of council were present for Thursday's meeting.
Council's next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 on the second floor of City Hall, D Street.
