St. Albans City Council has agreed to dispose of several surplus vehicles.

Four surplus police vehicles were approved during Monday's meeting for disposition.

Ward 8 Councilman Kevin Pennington, who is chairman of the Finance Committee, said before the meeting began that a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, 1999 Mitsubishi Galant, 2003 Mercedes C24 and 2002 Cadillac DeVille would be sold at public auction.

Council agreed to donate a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria that formerly served as a police cruiser to the Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The city's fire safety house will be donated to the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department.

Also at the meeting, a proposal by Councilman-at-large John Caudill IV to reduce the number of monthly council meetings from two to one was referred to the Ordinance Committee for study.

Council currently meets on the first and third Monday of each month.

In other action, council honored the city's Teen Court and Truancy Court and the people who make the courts work, especially Tyler Walker, Naydeen Wolfe, Cathy Henderson, Truancy Court Judge Wendy Ruiz and Rebecca Boardman.

Teen Court serves as an alternative to a regular court for teens that are charged with misdemeanors. Truancy Court provides youth a last chance to mend their ways; if Truancy Court is unsuccessful, the case is referred to Kanawha Circuit Court.

Members of council watched a YouTube video explaining how the Teen Court works, which was followed by an explanation of the courts' history from Mayor Dick Callaway.

During announcements, Pennington announced there would be a pool party Friday evening at City Park and movie night would be Saturday at dark at Roadside Park.

During the public forum portion of the meeting, Timothy Vance, who said he has lived on Lexington Drive for more than 23 years, complained about trees in his neighborhood that need to be taken down. He said a tree recently fell across the road and smashed his car and damaged his home.

The tree has been cut up; Mayor Callaway offered to have the city remove it.

Pennington suggested Vance express his concerns at the Aug. 12 Public Works Committee meeting.

In addition, a member of the St. Albans Historical Society complained about the removal of the old Central School's stairs, which were built in 1901, and asked that they be rebuilt.

Ward 9 Councilman Garry Pennington and Councilman-at-large John Boles Jr. did not attend the meeting. Ward 5 Councilman Christopher Withrow left the meeting early.

Council's next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 on the second floor of the municipal building at 51 Sixth Ave.
