Kanawha County students affected by the late-June floods returned to school Wednesday after a short delay. For many of them, it wasn't the school they were used to.
The same flood that destroyed or damaged a number of the students' homes also left both Clendenin Elementary and Herbert Hoover High schools closed indefinitely because of heavy flood damage.
On Wednesday, students from Herbert Hoover High School started half-day classes at Elkview Middle School, beginning their day in the afternoon after the younger students finished their day with morning classes. Students from Clendenin Elementary joined those at Bridge Elementary to double up on education in classrooms.
The school board is working to get portable classrooms to install on campuses at Bridge and Elkview to give the students more breathing room.
