Work on the new Crossings Mall bridge in Elkview is slated to begin next week.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper confirmed Friday that the county planning department issued the "long awaited" building permit to Plaza Management, which owns the shopping center.
Deputy Planning Director James Young said the estimated cost for the new bridge is $680,000, which is being paid for by Plaza Management.
"I believe the necessary permits from state agencies have been acquired," he said.
The bridge itself is being built off-site, Young said, adding that the preparation work on site is expected to begin next week.
"We are under the impression it will start this Monday," he said.
Young said Plaza Management paid for a hydrology analysis along Little Sandy Creek, which washed out the bridge to Crossings Mall during the June 23 floods.
"Basically, they looked at how the waters could change and ensured that whatever would happen in different events, the bridge would be able to handle [it]," Young said. "I think they did their due diligence."
Construction is expected to last six to eight weeks, Young said.
At least one business - the Bob Evans restaurant - has already laid workers off as a result of the bridge being out.
