Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Preschool was given $1,000 on Thursday to start science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) lessons.

AT&T contributed the money as part of a partnership with the Junior League of Charleston. The league plans to buy "STEM kits" for preschool classrooms. The Junior League also plans to help clean up the exterior of the King Center building this Saturday.

Michelle Settle, early childhood education coordinator at the preschool, said in a statement, "The STEM kits will be utilized in collaboration with the Creative Curriculum Study Starters Units used throughout Kanawha County Preschools. The use of the kits along with the curriculum will provide engaging school readiness activities that will promote global thinking and student collaboration."

Mayor Danny Jones said Thursday the services the King Center provides are "great," and called its programming and use of space "efficient." Jones acknowledged the impact on early education it has had.

"In some ways ... it's more versatile than a lot of school, especially with the size and the things that it does," Jones said.
