The Kanawha County public school system has released bus schedules for students attending its four flood-impacted schools: Bridge Elementary, Clendenin Elementary, Elkview Middle and Herbert Hoover High.

The current buildings of two of those schools, Clendenin and Hoover, were so damaged by the late June flooding that students won't be attending the facilities when the school year starts for most Kanawha students on Aug. 8. Clendenin students will attend Bridge until they move into portable classrooms in front of that school, and Hoover students will attend Elkview until they move into portables classrooms on that school's football field.

Peggy Stone, the Elkview bus terminal's supervisor, said student transit times shouldn't increase too much, and actually will decrease for some children who are closer to their new destination than they were to their original building.

To see the bus stop and schedule information for your child, visit the online "Look it Up" system at edulog.kana.k12.wv.us/edulog/webquery. Type in your address to find the information.

You can also call the Elkview bus terminal at 304-348-1991.

Stone said Clendenin Elementary students used to start school at 7:20 a.m. and get out at 1:50 p.m., but now they'll have to adjust to Bridge Elementary's start time of 7:40 a.m. and end time of 2:15 p.m. The Bridge times are the same as last school year.

She said students from all four schools will go home on separate buses. Clendenin Elementary students now will ride with Bridge Elementary and Elkview Middle students, instead of Hoover students, who now will be transported on their own to and from school.

Stone said most Clendenin Elementary students' travel times probably will increase about 10 minutes, though Clendenin Elementary students in areas like Wills Creek probably will have reduced travel times to Bridge.

Hoover students probably will have a less than 10-minute increase in their travel times, she said.

Unlike the shared-time situation between Bridge Elementary and Clendenin Elementary students at Bridge Elementary's facility that will go on until the portable classrooms there are installed, Hoover and Elkview Middle students will be splitting the day at Elkview Middle's building.

The middle-schoolers will attend in the mornings and the high-schoolers will attend in the evenings until the portable classrooms are set up and the students return to full-day schedules.
