For the fourth consecutive year, the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau exceeded its goal for hotel bookings in fiscal 2016.

President and CEO Alisa Bailey announced the visitors bureau's successes at its annual board meeting on Wednesday.

Its sales team booked nearly 29,000 hotel room nights over the last year - a 33 percent increase from 2012, according to a press release from the CVB.

Bailey also mentioned notable event bookings scheduled for the coming years, which includes agreements with a beauty pageant company, the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners and 15 motor coach group tours.

"That's what meeting planners really want - they want the experience. And that's what we're trying to do," Bailey said.

The visitors bureau is also into the second year of its digital campaign to attract visitors to Charleston.

As a result, Bailey said the CVB has seen double-digit increases in its web traffic and social media engagement.

Bailey also said the new ride sharing services available in Charleston is going to be a "game changer" for its tourism industry.

With companies such as Uber and Lyft now able to operate in West Virginia, and the recent arrival of Autopods in Charleston, "transportation in this city is really getting up to par with big cities."

Autopods, a pedicab company that expanded its operations to Charleston in early May, has provided more than 1,500 rides to date.

Its most popular one-way destination, Bailey said, is to Sam's Uptown Cafe, while the most popular round trip is to the 7-Eleven on Washington Street East.
