Roads were flooded and closed on the East End of Charleston Friday morning because of a water main break.

Washington Street between Brooks Street and Morris Street, in front of Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital, remains closed while West Virginia American Water crews work on repairs. Bradford Street between Lee Street and Lewis Street was also closed but has since reopened.

The break, which occurred on Washington Street between Brooks and Morris streets, was reported at about 4:45 a.m. As of about 8 a.m., the water had significantly receded but the Rite Aid parking lot still was flooded.

CAMC employees said several streets were flooded earlier in the morning.

Megan Hannah, spokeswoman for West Virginia American Water, said the company completed repairs a little after 3 p.m. and that service had been restored to the affected customers. Washington Street, between Brooks and Morris streets, is expected to remain closed into Sunday as the pavement is repaired. The few customers who experienced an outage were notified that they were under a boil water advisory. She said they would be notified when that advisory could be lifted. She said the hospital was not under a boil water advisory because it did not experience an outage.

Fewer than five customers were affected, Hannah said.
