After several months without a humane officer patrolling its streets, Dunbar will once again have a humane officer thanks to a countywide effort.

Dunbar City Council members voted Monday to join Nitro in utilizing a Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association humane officer. The two municipalities will share humane officers through the effort.

"The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society came in and pitched it to us. We think it will work better," Dunbar Mayor Terry Greenlee said. "Instead of having a humane officer on call five days a week we will now have one on duty seven days a week. It saves us time and money."

The 1-year contract won't save the city much in labor but it will when it comes to equipment, Greenlee said. The city will not have to purchase and outfit a vehicle with a cage, pay for fuel and insurance, he said.

"Response time for calls is expected to be about the same time," Greenlee said.

City council approved moving forward with paving projects on Marks Road and Low Gap

"Marks Road has got to be fixed," Greenlee said.

Portions of the street are caved in.

Hugh Leishman, city building inspector, said the issue stems from a drainage problem.

"The drain failed," Leishman said. "And the road collapsed, a couple feet at one spot, so when we go in and fix the drain we will fix the asphalt."

After a temporary fix, Low Gap will be repaved, Greenlee said.

Both projects are expected to begin soon.

Council member also approved hiring another firefighter.

"We have several firefighters on disability right now, and one of them is getting ready to retire," Greenlee said. "We are going to bring someone on to fill that position, so when he retires we are still up and running."

The hire is set for July 1, 2016.

In other business, council approved May 16 meeting minutes and approved an adjustment to the 2015 - 2016 budget
