A train hauling coal overturned in the eastern part of Kanawha County Thursday evening, blocking the road for about two hours. The derailment happened just after 5 p.m. near the intersection of Cabin Creek Road and Ronda Road.
The train, which has 150 cars and is 8,000 feet long, was attempting to carry 21,000 tons of coal from a Black Hawk Mining site to Handley when it derailed, conductor David Fleck said.
"We don't know what the circumstances are that led to it," Fleck said.
Approximately seven of the cars left the track, he said. Four cars were overturned. Cabin Creek Road reopened around 7:30 p.m., after the crew removed the cars blocking the roadway.
Fleck said he's not sure how long take for crews to remove the wrecked portion of the train.
"I'd say a minimum of two days," he said. "It could be anywhere from two to three days."
A portion of the train had blocked an access road, but Fleck said none of the houses in the area would be inaccessible after the road reopened.
Daniel Dickinson, who lives in the area where the derailment happened, said he was at the railroad crossing waiting on the train to pass when it derailed.
He heard a big boom that shook the road, he said.
A call to CSX was not immediately returned Thursday.
