The Kanawha County Commission has announced that more than 1.2 million pounds of garbage were taken to landfills during the annual Kanawha County spring cleanups.
During three cleanups this year, 4,023 vehicles, 8,650 tires, 630.97 tons of trash, 104.97 tons of scrap metal and 88.97 tons of electronics were collected, according to a news release from the commission.
In a statement, Commissioner Dave Hardy suggested that the garbage could have been illegally dumped in the community if not for the cleanups. He said he was thankful to everyone involved.
"Earth Day is the perfect time to reflect on the sheer volume of material that is being properly disposed of and recycled," he said.
