A forest fire in Eastern Kanawha County was contained to several acres late Tuesday, after covering a much larger area Monday evening, C.W. Sigman, the county's deputy emergency manager said.

Firefighters from the county, five local fire departments and the West Virginia Division of Forestry fought the fire, in a steep, hilly area between Slaughters Creek and Cabin Creek, Sigman said.

"Last night, it covered many acres," he said.

By late Tuesday afternoon, firefighters had it contained within fire lines - areas cleared of leaves, branches and other flammable debris. Sigman said one small pump truck was still on the scene, to put out any remaining hot spots, and crews were largely doing clean up work and widening the fire lines.

No buildings or structures were damaged by the fire, which was called in at about 12:45 p.m. Monday, an emergency dispatcher said.

Sigman said he didn't know the cause of the fire - most often, forest fires are either caused by arson or burning trash - but that the dry weather might have been a factor.

"We recommend people do not burn, even during legal hours, until after we get some rain," Sigman said.
