Fresh fruit, vegetables and meat will be sold at a "pop-up" farmers market at Davis Park in Charleston Wednesday - part of a program designed to encourage families on public assistance to eat healthy foods.

The temporary market will be open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vendors include The Bee Keepers' Berry Farm, Itty Bitty Farms and Thankful Valley. The farmers will accept cash, credit cards, checks and Electronic Benefit Transfer cards from people who take part in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP provides monthly public assistance benefits to low-income families across the state.

"Through this partnership, we are working to increase awareness and promote incentives such as doubling benefits when the EBT card is used for SNAP purchases," said Karen Bowling, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Resources. "This is so important to those families who might think they cannot eat fresh and affordably..."

Mums also will be available for sale at the farmer's market. Davis Park is located on Capitol Street in downtown Charleston.

DHHR administers SNAP, which is regulated by the federal government. DHHR's website, www.wvdhhr.org/ebt has a list of farmers markets that accept EBT cards. DHHR plans additional "pop-up" farmer's markets in the coming months.
