Eleven people were displaced by a fire at apartments in Charleston on Wednesday night.

The fire was reported at the Vandalia Terrace Apartments on 1507 Dorchester Road at about 9 p.m., according to a Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher.

Charleston fire Capt. Tim Griffith said that one apartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. It took about an hour to extinguish the fire, then firefighters remained on scene for about another two hours.

He said one apartment was destroyed, one was damaged by fire and four were damaged by smoke and water.

Koko Johnson, 26, was one of the tenants whose apartment was damaged by the smoke and fire.

Johnson said that she came home at about 9 p.m. and saw that her apartment was smoky.

She was able to grab some clothes before the flames broke out, but they were damaged by the smoke.

The cause of the fire still is under investigation, but it is not believed to be arson.

The Red Cross is assisting in placing the 11 people in temporary housing.

Lisa Conley, the apartment complex manager, said everyone who was affected by the fire would be relocated into other units in the complex.
