The Out of the Darkness Community Walk, a suicide prevention/awareness walk, is planned for Oct. 7 in Charleston, according to a news release.
"We are walking to bring awareness to this leading cause of death and let people in the community know that they are not alone," said Cindy Stagg and Andrea St. Clair, walk co-chairs and board members for the West Virginia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in a joint statement. "There is help out there for those who live with a mental health condition and support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide."
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in 2015.
The walk will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the State Capitol Complex.
Funds go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's local and national programs and research, the release states.
St. Clair said participants can register online at www.afsp.org/CharlestonWV or on site the day of the walk. For more information, call St. Clair at 304-444-4230, call Stagg at 304-444-4030, or email charlestonwvootdwalk@gmail.com.
