Outdoor and nature enthusiasts will have a field day Sept. 23 at the Forks of Coal State Nature Area near Alum Creek.
Visitors to the "Field Day at the Forks of Coal" will feature three separate activities designed to help people learn about the 102-acre nature area - a bird-watching hike, a geology and history hike, and a kayak "floating nature hike."
Check-in for the float will begin at 8:45 a.m. The cost is $20 for those who plan to use their own kayaks and $25 for those who need to rent one. The fees also cover shuttle service and a snack. Participants must preregister and pay by Sept. 18.

Sign-up for the nature hikes will take place at 9:30 a.m., and the hikes will depart at 10 a.m. In addition to the hikes and float trip, a variety of educational exhibits will be in place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A book sale and a food and bake sale are also planned.
