Two groups exchanged gunfire during a drug deal on South Park Road in Charleston on Wednesday night, police said.
The buyers opened fire at about 11:30 p.m., said Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives for the Charleston Police Department. "The group that was selling the drugs then returned fire toward the vehicle that had fired at them," he said.
Cooper said the groups shot at least 30 rounds of handgun ammunition.
"We're fortunate that no one was hurt or killed - that's a lot of gunfire," he said.
Police are canvassing the area and reviewing surveillance video. Cooper said ballistic evidence may connect the shooting to other incidents.
On Tuesday morning, someone fired at least 10 rounds from an assault-style rifle in Charleston. One bullet struck an ambulance at the corner of Central Avenue and Vine Street on the West Side.
"There were residents in their homes," Cooper said of the recent shooting. "Stray bullets have no conscience."
Police have yet to arrest a suspect in either incident, Cooper told reporters on Thursday.
