Pinch Elementary's air conditioning system hasn't been fully functioning since the school year started Monday, the school's principal said.
Betty Moore said six of her classrooms don't have AC from the school's main system, but they're all being served by portable chillers. She said she's seen classrooms hit 79 degrees Fahrenheit right after lunch, but noted the school dismisses students at 2 p.m. everyday.
Moore said the school has been moving students into cooler areas when it gets that hot.
"Maintenance has been working very hard to get us up and running," she said. "We're waiting on a part."
She said the Kanawha County public school system's maintenance department has been checking daily to see when the part comes in.
Briana Warner, the school system's communications director, wrote in an email that the part will be in Friday "and staff will work as quickly as possible to install it."
"They hope to have it functioning on Monday," she said. "In the meantime, small spot chillers have been replaced with larger chillers to keep staff and students cooler."
She said the part cost $7,000.
