Community members in Charleston will hold a vigil in solidarity with Charlottesville, Virginia, this evening on the Capitol grounds.

The group will meet at the statue of Stonewall Jackson - at the corner of Kanawha Boulevard and California Street - to call for the removal of the statue and to condemn racism in light of the protests in Charlottesville.

The Charlottesville turmoil swelled during a Unite the Right rally Saturday, organized by white nationalists to oppose the city's plan to remove a Robert E. Lee memorial. Lee and Jackson were both confederate generals.

A man drove his car into a crowd of people protesting the white supremacists on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 19 others, police said.

Organizers in Charleston said in a news release are calling for the state to remove the "racist symbol" from the grounds, and have arranged for local civil rights leaders to speak at the event.

"Over 150 years ago, Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson purchased a black child named Emma to give as a gift to his new wife," said Jack Deskins, one of the event organizers, in a news release. "His greatest accomplishment was killing thousands of people - including West Virginians - to preserve the institution of slavery. Why do we still honor this man?"

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. at the statue.

For more information, the group started an event on Facebook.
