Registration open for WV Gaming Championship esports event

Players have until Aug. 9 to register for the West Virginia Gaming Championship, a day-long competitive video game event Aug. 12 at Macy's Court at the Charleston Town Center Mall.

The event is presented by the Gazette-Mail and sponsored by Gamestop, the Town Center, the West Virginia National Guard and Everywhere Local LLC.

The championship, which will consist of three separate tournaments, will bring hundreds of gamers of all ages to the Capital City to compete for more than $5,000 in cash and prizes. Internet will be provided by Suddenlink.

Solo players can test their skills in 16-person, single-elimination tournaments for "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" on Nintendo Switch and "NBA 2K17" on PlayStation 4.

The main event will be a 32-team, 4v4 single-elimination "Call of Duty: Black Ops III" tournament on PS4. Entry fees are $15 for the single-player events and $200 per team in the "Black Ops III" competition.

Gamers can register online at wvgamingchampionship.com. Spectators must pay $10 to view the Call of Duty Tournaments.

It's free to view the Mario Kart and NBA tournament.

Call of Duty players will compete for $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place.

Prizing for NBA 2K17 will be $100 and swag for first, $50 for second, and $25 for third.

For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players can win $100 and swag for first place, $50 for second place or $25 for third place.
