City replacing troublesome trees on Quarrier Street

Several trees along Quarrier Street that have become a safety issue for pedestrians are being replaced.

The Charleston Public Grounds Department had cut down five locust trees lining the sidewalks just east of the intersection of Quarrier and Capitol streets as of Monday.

The trees had been growing too large for the sidewalk, and the root systems are pushing up the surrounding brick, causing pedestrians to trip, said public grounds employee Dottie Blankenship.

City employees must still remove the imposing trees' root systems and correct the bricks before planting new trees.

Those will be red rocket maple trees, Blankenship said.

"They won't spread out as far, and they're more [appropriate] for streetscapes," she said.

The new trees will likely be planted in the next two or three weeks, she added.

Public Grounds has no plans at the moment to remove any additional trees.
