After a Charleston man set it on fire July 13, a dog is recovering at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.
Daniel, a chihuahua-pug mix, was given over to the KCHA by his owner last week after Teddy Estep lit the 20-pound dog on fire.
"We can't speak to the details of the criminal case, but we can tell Daniel's owner did the right thing and signed him over to us - where we can ensure that he'll be loved, cared for, and treated like the absolute sweetheart he is," a Facebook post by the KCHA reads.
Estep was arrested last Thursday on animal cruelty charges and was taken to South Central Regional Jail.
The dog's owner, Jessica Young, told WSAZ Estep was staying with her and her boyfriend in Charleston when he lit her dog on fire. She said she'd known Estep for years and had "mixed feelings" about the incident, as she believes he needs mental help, not prison.
After spending a late night with the KCHA's veterinary team, Daniel is expected to make a full recovery, according to KCHA's Facebook post. Daniel's medical expenses are expected to exceed $3,000, and anyone interested in donating can do so by visiting http://AdoptCharleston.com/Give
