Residents were invited at Tuesday's West Virginia Day celebration to sign an oversized card and enjoy birthday cake in marking the 154th anniversary of statehood. West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863 after seceding from Virginia during the Civil War. The event, hosted at the Culture Center at the state Capitol Complex in Charleston, featured youth activities and a cake-cutting ceremony. There also was limited-edition Blenko glassware for sale and a presentation from author and architectural photographer Thorney Lieberman.
