A woman who was lying on a Charleston street was run over by a truck and killed Thursday night.
Charleston police found Katie Stewart, 34, wearing all black clothing on Lee Street East, near the intersection with Leon Sullivan Way, according to a police news release.
A woman, who was driving the Ford F-150 pickup, told police that she was driving east on Lee Street at about 11:30 p.m. As she approached the crosswalk, she said, she saw what she thought was a "dark bag."
The driver was unable to miss the object, police said, and struck it. She stopped the truck and realized she had run over a person. The driver immediately called 911, police said, and Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office.
An investigation revealed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the news release, and no charges were filed against her.
