Charleston police arrested a 26-year-old man after he allegedly stole from football players in the University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field on Thursday.

John Selbe, of Charleston, entered the team's locker room as players faced each other in the annual Maroon-Gold scrimmage game at Laidley Field, said Dave Traube, the university's director of communications.

"The locker room is always closed off, and especially during games it's locked, so the police are looking to see if they can check with the cameras and see how maybe he got in," he said.

Police soon recovered personal belongings such as cellphones and credit cards, though some items were damaged, Traube said.

A surveillance camera recorded Selbe walking toward the locker room and then leaving the area with the players' belongings, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Officers reportedly found Selbe with the property at East End Community Park, less than a mile from the stadium.

Authorities charged Selbe with grand larceny and took him to South Central Regional Jail, where he remained Friday afternoon in lieu of a $5,000 bail.
