Dunbar City Council moved a step further Monday night with its plan to clean up and sell 2003 Wilson Street.

Council accepted a $1,200 bid from R.S. Environment, Inc. to remove asbestos from the house located on the property.

There is no definitive timeline for the asbestos removal, but it should be complete within three to four weeks, Dunbar Mayor Terry Greenlee said.

The property has been on council's radar for some time. About a year ago council condemned the home on Wilson Street as it was nearly "falling down", Greenlee said.

"When we condemned it [the owner] did not want to tear it down so he gave it to the city," Greenlee said.

City workers will complete the demolition, which is set before winter, weather permitting.

"We are going to take it down ourselves so we don't have to wait on anybody," Greenlee said.

City workers recently completed another demolition near City Park, Greenlee said.

Council members also accepted a $3,000 bid to purchase asphalt from West Virginia Paving. The asphalt will go toward a paving project on Low Gap Drive.

The area serves as a short cut from Dunbar Avenue to Roxalana Road.

"We are overlaying the whole street - just making it nicer," Greenlee said. "It's been a long time coming."

In other business, council:

n Approved minutes from Oct. 19 meeting

n Approved police contracts

n Nighttime Christmas Parade is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 4, with a tree lighting ceremony following.
